What Is a Google Android Notebook?

Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google and designed for use on cellular phones and tablet devices. A small number of manufacturers have made Android available on full-sized laptops as well, creating Google Android Notebooks. Android differs from a standard notebook operating system such as Windows or Mac OS in that it's built to support smaller screen sizes, less powerful hardware specifications and touch-screen interfaces.

    Android on a Notebook

Android is an open source operating system available to download for free. The process of installing it is a relatively complex one, and needs some level of expertise, but a range of step-by-step guides can be found on the Web. No official Google-branded Android notebooks are yet on the market, though a number of third-party manufacturers have released devices. Google has lent its branding and name to Chromebooks, low-powered netbooks that run the company's alternative Chrome OS operating system.

    Asus Eee Pad

Asus has released two notebook-style devices running Google Android. The Eee Pad Transformer TF101 is a tablet device running Android sold with an optional keyboard dock that turns it into a traditional notebook. The keyboard provides a physical input device as well as extra battery power, but all of the internal components (such as the processor and storage) are stored in the tablet half of the unit. The Eee Pad Slider SL101 is a tablet with a built-in keyboard that can be slid out from underneath when required. Full details and specifications are available at asus.com.

    Acer Aspire One

Acer's Aspire One range includes a variety of notebooks that offer dual-boot capabilities, enabling them to launch either Windows or Android whenever they start up. The devices are available with a choice of specifications and colors. The Aspire One D255, for example, is powered by a 1.66-GHz processor and 1GB of RAM, and comes with a 160GB hard drive. Exact model specifications and the availability of Android editions of the Aspire One notebooks varies from country to country, with product lists updated on a regular basis.

    Other Models

Many other Android notebooks are on the market, with new models launched on a regular basis. Cheaper, low-powered netbooks running the Google Android operating system are available from other manufacturers such as Augen, Iview and Toshiba. The Toshiba AC100, for example, is a small notebook running the Android operating system, powered by a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and a solid-state disk offering 32GB of on-board storage. Other manufacturers have indicated plans for Android notebooks, with NEC showing off a prototype of a super-thin device it plans to launch within a couple of years.
