What Are Android Tablets?

Android tablets are tablet computers that operate with Google's Android mobile operating system. These tablets resemble the Apple iPad, the high-profile tablet computer that operates with Apple's iOS operating system. The Android operating system is also used on some smartphones, among other devices. Honeycomb is a version of Android designed specifically for tablet computers.

Tablets

Tablet computers are small computers that consist of a single panel. Tablets do not have separate keyboards attached to their screens, as laptop computers do. Instead, tablet users operate the computer by pressing their fingers on a touch screen, which changes views with commands. Microsoft released the first tablet computer in 2000. Android tablet computers began to appear in 2010 after the introduction of the iPad.

    Android Basics

The first Android tablet computers used an operating system that was not designed specifically for tablet computers. That mobile operating system, which was known as Android Gingerbread, was geared more toward smartphone devices, but it was adopted for the tablets. However, the Android Honeycomb operating system was designed entirely for tablet computers. Honeycomb was introduced in 2011.

    Android Features

The various Android tablets vary in their performance and features. However, they have common features through the Android operating system, such as a common management system for running and accessing apps, which are software applications created for tablet computers and handheld devices. Android also manages activities such as engaging in multitasking work and navigating computer tools.

    Brands

The Android operating system is used by a number of tablet computer manufacturers, including Samsung, T-Mobile, Asus Eee, Acer, Motorola, HTC, Archos, LG, Creative Ziio, Hannspree, Notion, Advent and ViewSonic. Even Barnes & Noble uses the Android system to operate its Nook Color device, an eBook reader that also has some of the functions of a tablet computer.
